The Atlantic releases entire Signal chat

On Monday, Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic, was accidentally added to a group chat on the messaging app Signal that including such government officials like SecDef Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance, where those officials were talking about plans to bomb the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Goldberg didn’t think the chat was real until, in his words, “the bombs started falling.” In the last two days, Trump officials such as Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard have sat before the United States Senate and both answered and avoided questions given to them. According to The Hill, “At one point, being questioned by Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), Gabbard said she’d defer to Hegseth and the National Security Council on that answer. “You’re the head of the intelligence community. You’re supposed to know about classifications,” King replied.” This morning, The Atlantic made the decision to publicly release the Signal chats. The Hill wrote that, “The published chat offers details about the attack that the initial article did not contain, including the specific timeline of the airstrike and what weapons would be used.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “As we have repeatedly stated, there was no classified information transmitted in the group chat. However, as the CIA Director and National Security Advisor have both expressed today, that does not mean we encourage the release of the conversation. This was intended to be a an [sic] internal and private deliberation amongst high-level senior staff and sensitive information was discussed. So for those reason [sic] — yes, we object to the release.”

Behind the scenes, Trump blasts Waltz

According to Politico, President Trump was fuming at National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, the person who added Goldberg to the Signal group chat — but not for potentially revealing classified information. Reportedly, Trump was upset that Waltz has Goldberg’s phone number saved in his phone. “The president was pissed that Waltz could be so stupid,” an anonymous source told Politico. Another anonymous source, according to Politico, “said the incident has strained Waltz’s relationship with Trump’s inner circle.” Trump has held a grudge against The Atlantic ever since they used an anonymous source to report that he called Americans who died in war “suckers and losers” during his first term. Politico said, “Waltz, in an interview with Fox News Tuesday night, said a staffer wasn’t responsible and that he was taking “full responsibility” and that he made a “mistake.” But he insisted that Goldberg’s number had been erroneously added to someone else’s contact.” Leavitt stated that the White House continues to have “the utmost confidence in Mike Waltz and his entire national security team.”
