US blocks sea salt imports from South Korean salt farm over forced labor concerns
The U.S. is blocking imports of sea salt from a South Korean farm due to concerns over forced labor.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) a withhold release order, after investigations revealed that workers, including migrant workers from countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, were subjected to exploitative labor practices at the salt farm.
AP NEWS says, “The widespread slavery at Sinan’s salt farms was exposed in 2014 when dozens of slavery victims — most of them with disabilities — were rescued from the islands following an investigation by mainland police. Some of their stories were documented by The Associated Press, which highlighted how slavery persisted despite the exposure.
U.S. Customs said it identified several signs of forced labor during its investigation of Taepyung, including “abuse of vulnerability, deception, restriction of movement, retention of identity documents, abusive living and working conditions, intimidation and threats, physical violence, debt bondage, withholding of wages, and excessive overtime.”
Most of the salt farm slaves in 2014, were found to be beaten, overworked, and confined to their houses; after receiving either no pay, or very little in return.
Since Last Wednesday, Customs personnel at all U.S. ports of entry are required to hold sea salt products sourced from the farm

Money is leaving the stock market faster than Morgan Wallen at goodnights.”. Wallen’s Instagram story that was posted shortly after the event, which read “Get me to god’s country”, was also mentioned during the cold open in reference to Heard Island and McDonald Island. Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs take effect
On Saturday, President Trump imposed a blanket 10 percent tariff on all imports coming into the United States, citing the need to rectify large and persistent trade deficits and counteract unfair trade practices by other nations, according to the EBC Financial Group. Higher tariffs were individually set for 57 countries, starting next Wednesday.
These tariffs were often placed without rhyme or reason — for example, the president placed 10% tariffs on Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, external territories owned by Australia that have no permanent populations and no infrastructure to support one. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “It just shows and exemplifies the fact that nowhere on Earth is safe from this.” It is important to note that no tariffs were imposed on Russia, one of the United States’s most prominent enemies. This morning, Trump pushed back on criticism of his tariffs, calling on people not to be a “panican,” coining a new term. On Truth Social, Trump said, “The United States has a chance to do something that should have been done DECADES AGO. Don’t be Weak! Don’t be Stupid! Don’t be a PANICAN (A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!). Be Strong, Courageous, and Patient, and GREATNESS will be the result!” The stock market has been swinging down, up, and down again over fears of a recession because of the tariffs.
This morning, according to AP News, the Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly erased a morning loss of 1,700 points, shot up more than 800 points, then went back to a loss of 629 points. The S&P 500 likewise made sudden up-and-down lurching movements and was down 0.7% in the first hour of trading. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.2%.
Eric Adams announces run as an independent
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, whose term has been mired by controversy, has announced that he will not be running for reelection as a Democrat after polling shows he is unlikely to defeat former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Last week Wednesday, a federal judge dismissed the corruption charges against him and prohibited the possibility of them being brought back, which is seen as a blow to the Trump Administration, as some in the judiciary foresaw the possibility of the president using the charges to control Adams. The mayor said that he would rely on “a solid base of people” outside of Manhattan, with an emphasis on ethnic minorities who boosted him to victory four years ago, according to Politico.
