Sports with Mitch Hurocy

 The lacrosse team traveled to Oneonta saturday. They lost with a final score of 20-6. Emma Cockrell and Sydney Buchko each had two goals for the blue devils. The team travels to take on Morrisville today in what looks to be a win and in game.

The softball team took on Oswego on Friday and split a doubleheader, with scores being 12-0 win and 2-0 loss. Kendall Phillips continued her stellar season in the win with a complete game allowing only 5 hits. They’re back at it today with a double header at Geneseo. They are sitting comfortably in a playoff spot with 3 SUNYAC series to go.

The baseball team had a three game series with Oneonta over the weekend, losing all 3. They have a doubleheader today at home starting at 2:30.

The bandits lost their final game of the regular season 14-11 at the hands of georgia. They already had the one seed locked up however. They take on the San Diego Seals at home on Friday in the NLL quarterfinals.

Dhane Smith and Josh Byrne both finished with 134 points, tied for most in the league.  Smith also had 103 assists, breaking his own league record for the 4th straight season. Paul Dawson also finished the season with 53 blocked shots, destroying the previous league record by 24. They play Friday at home at 7:30.

The NFL draft starts tomorrow at 8 p.m. The Tennessee Titans have the first pick. The bills hold the 30th pick in the first round. If you plan to watch for the Bills, they likely won’t pick till around 11:40

‘Conclave’ Streaming Viewership Jumps After the Pope’s Passing
After news of Pope Francis’ death on Monday, the world is wondering how a papal conclave works, which is the gathering of the College of Cardinals the convene to elect a new pope. Well, the world is turning to Oscar-winning film Conclave for answers, which NBC News states, “had a 283% spike in streaming viewership in the 24 hours after Pope Francis died, according to data from the data analytics company Luminate.” According to Michael Moreland, a professor of law and religion at Villanova university, Conclave paints a relatively accurate picture of the way candidates rise and fall throughout the intense balloting process, which takes as much time as it needs to reach the required two-thirds vote. To see for yourself, Conclave is available on many streaming platforms, like Peacock, Netflix, Paramount+, Max, Disney+, and recently Amazon Prime.

Oscar Voters Didn’t Have to Watch Nominated Movies Until Now

Speaking of Oscar winning movies, did you know that the Academy only implemented mandatory viewing of nominees before they vote.. This year? Announced in a statement Monday, April 21st, the Academy says, “In a procedural change, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars. The Academy will monitor viewing activity through its members-only Academy Screening Room streaming platform. For films viewed outside the platform — such as at festivals, screenings or private events — members must submit a form indicating when and where they watched the film.” Many X users were taken aback at this announcement, exasperated that movies didn’t have to be seen in order to be voted on. How did they make a decision on what to vote for before this? The world may never know.
